Tigaki Salt Lake (Alykes)
Tigaki · Nature
Why go
The salt lake of Alykes lies between Tigaki and Marmari and is a Natura 2000 site, protected for the migrating birds it shelters. Flamingos and ruddy shelducks come in the spring and autumn migrations; herons and pelicans are seen too, among reeds, rushes and tamarisks.
Until 1989 it was worked for sea salt, which is why old buildings stand nearby. In summer the lake dries out and leaves a white crust of salt. You can reach it on foot, by bike, car or motorbike. It is a protected area: keep your distance from the birds.

When to go
Spring or autumn, for the birds. In summer it is dry.
