Therma hot spring
South-east coast · Nature
Why go
At Therma, about 13 km from Kos Town in the south-east of the island, a natural hot spring runs down into the sea. Stones on the beach hold the warm water in a pool, where it mixes with the sea, and gas bubbles rise from the bottom. The name comes from the Greek word for hot.
The water is 42 to 50 °C at the source and hottest closest to it, so go in from the sea side. From the road it is about a ten-minute walk down a dusty track to the beach.

Our tips
- The way down is a dirt road, about ten minutes on foot, and the way back is uphill. Proper shoes help.
- Near the spring the water is very hot. Go in slowly.
- Sulphur damages jewellery. Take it off, and wear an old or dark swimsuit.
- There are no shops nearby. Bring water and something to eat.
- It gets cool in the evening. Bring a jacket.
