Plane Tree of Hippocrates
Kos Town · History
Why go
The tree stands in Platanou Square, opposite the castle and beside the Ancient Agora. Its trunk is 12 m round and hollow inside, and it is one of the oldest trees in Europe. Tradition says Hippocrates taught in its shade; at no more than about five hundred years old, it may have grown from the roots of the original.
Two old fountains stand beside it, one in a marble urn with an Arabic inscription. The tree has been a protected natural monument since 1985, and the square is free to walk into.
Facts checked on 24 October 2026.
