Casa Romana

Kos Town · History

Why go

A house from the late 2nd and early 3rd century AD, built over a Hellenistic one; its size and decoration suggest a wealthy official. After the earthquake of 1933 Italian archaeologists excavated it, and by 1940 it was restored.

It has 36 rooms around three courtyards, two of them with two-storey colonnades. Most of the mosaic floors date from the 3rd century AD; in the first courtyard a panther attacks a deer.

Our tips

  • The seabed mosaic from this house is in the Archaeological Museum, a short walk away. Both are easy to see on the same day.
