Antimachia Castle
Antimachia · History
Why go
The Knights Hospitaller built this castle on a plateau south-east of Antimachia, 4 km from the village and 24 km from Kos Town, looking over the south coast. It is triangular, each wall following the line of the ground. In June 1457 it held out for 23 days against an Ottoman fleet; the Knights repaired it in 1494, after the earthquake of 1493.
Inside are the ruins of the old settlement, abandoned in 1840, several cisterns and two churches: Agios Nikolaos from the 16th century and the chapel of Agia Paraskevi from the early 18th. Entry is free, and the castle can be reached by car or motorbike from the main road.
Facts checked on 23 October 2026.
