Ancient Agora

Kos Town · History

Why go

The Agora was the commercial and social heart of ancient Kos, built in the 4th century BC. Italian archaeologists uncovered it after the earthquake of 1933, and it is one of the largest ancient agoras excavated in Greece; most of the ancient city still lies under the streets around it.

You walk among the remains of the market, part of the city walls, sanctuaries of Aphrodite and Heracles and part of the ancient harbour, with two restored columns opposite the altar of Dionysus. Entry is free.

Our tips

  • The ground is uneven and there is little shade. Comfortable shoes help.
