Kefalos
Updated 24 October 2026

Kefalos is at the south-western end of Kos, about 42 km from Kos Town and 16 km from the airport. It has two parts: Kamari on the coast, with the harbour, cafés and tavernas, and the old village on the hill, with its narrow lanes.
The bay
In Kefalos bay the sandy beaches lie one next to another, so you can try several in a day. Agios Stefanos looks out to the islet of Kastri and its chapel of Agios Nikolaos.

Further out
About 5 km north of the village, Limnionas has a small harbour and a quiet beach. On the western tip, Agios Theologos is a place for the sunset, and Kochilari is for windsurfers and kitesurfers.
The old capital
Kefalos was once Astypalaia, the capital of the island until 366 BC. At Palatia, about 3 km south of the village, are the ruins of a temple of Demeter from the 5th century BC, a Hellenistic theatre, and the church of Panagia Palatiani.
