Kardamena

Updated 24 October 2026

Kardamena is on the south coast of Kos, about 30 km from Kos Town and 6 km from the airport. It stands where ancient Alasarna was; today's village dates from 1865.

The beach

Some 6 km of mostly sandy coast, with sunbeds, beach bars and tavernas. The sea is usually calm, but in places it gets deep quickly, and a few stretches are rocky, so bring water shoes.

From the harbour

Boats from the harbour go to Agia Irini beach and to Nisyros, where you can walk into the volcano's crater.

In the village

The town hall has two exhibitions, on local folklore and on the area's seafaring past. The church of the Virgin Mary celebrates its feast on 8 September.

Towards Antimachia

Inland, the Knights' castle stands on a plateau above the south coast, with free entry, and peacocks roam the pine forest of Plaka.
